“Look Out Below”
Live @ Bingham’s
February 1st, 2003
I’ve always considered “Look Out Below” to be the most decidedly ’60s of any Features song. The lyrics are a clever take on a popular phrase involving, of course, love and the melody is incredibly sing-songy, making this one adorable song. That’s not a bad thing, though. A song like this shows just how varied the band can be. Plus Rollum’s drumming on this song has always been a highlight for me. The way he completely loses it on the buildup to the second chorus (I like to imagine that’s him screaming during that part on this bootleg) is delightful and keeps this from just being a lost Herman’s Hermits song. “Look Out Below” is a good little song and its genius is in its simplicity.
“Look Out Below” should have been on Exhibit A. It’s exclusion really shocked fans, especially due to the inclusion of the lesser-played “Situation Gone Bad.” “Look Out Below” debuted on August 22nd, 2002 at the Boro. On a personal note, this was the first Features song I ever saw make its debut and that show at the Boro was the first time I saw the Features at an 18 and up venue. The song went on to become a live staple at shows until April 2004, alongside all the other songs on Exhibit A. The song was last played, as far as I can tell, at the acoustic in-store performance at Grimey’s in September 2004.
On a side note, the show that this bootleg comes from was a minor source of controversy on the old Features message board. This show was a benefit to save the Red Rose, Murfreesboro’s only cool coffee shop/indie venue/record store at the time. The benefit was held at Bingham Barnes’ apartment, which led to a lot of uncertainty about who actually could go. You can read all of it here.
