June 21st, 2002“Thursday” on Thursday. Whoah, guys, this is kinda perfect timing. Let this be the soundtrack to the most epic six minutes you have today.
Things of note: Rollum does something completely different in the lead up to the speed up. Never heard of him doing this before, but then again “Thursday” is the song that Rollum plays the most with.

You can her me yelling “hey” at the wrong time, all alone, after the la-da-da-da’s that precede the sped up tempo. I remember doing this, and I remember being embarrassed.

I first wrote about “Thursday” on May 26th.
This version of “Thursday” is hands down my favorite. Rollum’s clicking during the opening is a great addition and something he rarely did, but then again Rollum changes bits and pieces of the song every time it’s played. I also love this version because of the uncanny speed Rollum propels it to. I don’t think I’ve ever heard “Thursday” this fast and it’s a testament to just how in synch this band is. When Rollum decides to push this song to it’s breaking point, the rest of the band is right there with him. And to counter, it’s hilarious to hear Pelham slow the song down considerably for a second when he gains control again. This version of the song highlights the interplay between band members that has become one of the greatest parts about hearing it live.

There are sixteen versions of “Thursday” in my possession, but this request came somewhat specifically for a recorded version so bam, here it is. The recording does a cursory job of capturing what makes the song special. Most all the bits (the quiet first verse, the call and response la-da-das, the “hey hey” that leads into the second verse, the handclaps, whistling and the closing chants of “hey”) are present but they lack the oomph of the live shows. “Thursday,” most always performed last, is a Features whirlwind that comes out of nowhere, encircling and enveloping and engulfing the audience. It’s a perfect storm of rock and roll, you guys. There’s also the joy in watching the song performed live, as it’s almost completely Rollum’s show. During the first verse where he’s quiet, he’s sometimes smoking, sometimes playing a game boy, sometimes sleeping. Then when the song picks up after the second verse, it’s Rollum’s call. He can make the song go as fast or as slow as he wants, and he usually chooses fast. Ramones-fast. And it works.
I’m a bit fuzzy on the history of “Thursday.” This 10” came out in 1999, the year that I’m pretty sure Don Sergio and Jason Taylor left the band and Rollum joined. Just going by how this recording sounds, this is the original lineup playing (there are two guitars, the drums are much more straightforward) meaning that “Thursday” is very much a classic Features song. As their standard closer, “Thursday” was played more than any other Features song from 2001 to 2006. Only “Leave It All Behind” comes close to beating it, and I doubt it does. Of course “Thursday” being played at a show is bittersweet since it signals the end of the show, or at least the end before the encore is played. Still, what a send-off it is. “Thursday” is still played today.
